Android Show Spotlights Upcoming Features
Before the highly anticipated Google I/O 2025, Google provided a sneak peek at the future of Android with ‘The Android Show: I/O Edition.’ The event showcased upcoming changes to the Android OS, its visual design, and the integration of Gemini AI across various platforms.
Material 3 Expressive: A Fresh New Look
Android is getting a visual overhaul with Material 3 Expressive. This update to Google’s design language introduces new animations, typography, and colors, aiming to make Android and its apps more engaging and easier to use, especially for younger audiences. Users can expect a more playful and dynamic experience on Android 16 and Wear OS 6, with the ability to add more tools to Quick Settings, apps, and widgets.
Gemini Expands to More Devices
Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, is expanding its reach beyond smartphones to Wear OS, Google TV, and Android Auto. Users can leverage Gemini for tasks like setting timers and creating reminders using natural language. In Android Auto, Gemini Live will enable live conversations with the AI. Google TV will use Gemini for personalized TV and movie recommendations. Gemini will also be available on Google’s new Android XR platform.
Enhanced Security and Device Tracking
Android 16 will introduce improved security features, including an enhanced AI model for detecting spam texts and calls, focusing on new scam types. The update will also allow granting accessibility privileges during calls with unknown contacts and a Key Verifier tool for verifying the identity of callers using encryption keys.
The Find My Device network is evolving into the Find Hub, offering enhanced tracking capabilities for Android devices and compatible accessories. The Find Hub will support devices with ultra-wideband radios for more precise tracking and utilize satellite connectivity to locate devices even without cellular service.
