Larger display and new screen tech expected
Huawei is preparing to follow up its Mate X6 foldable phone with an even more ambitious device, according to recent leaks from China. The upcoming Mate X7 is said to improve on its predecessor with a larger display, stronger durability, and inventive camera features—signs that Huawei remains highly competitive in the foldable space despite international market pressure.
The main screen of the Mate X7 will reportedly measure 7.95 inches when unfolded, using advanced LTPO OLED technology for variable refresh rates and greater energy efficiency. The panel’s 2K resolution and ultra-thin glass surface put it close to tablet territory, catering to those who want a larger display without sacrificing pocketability.
Huawei focuses on improved durability
Durability has always been a sticking point for foldable devices. This time, Huawei seems determined to address those concerns, integrating improved water resistance. While no official IP rating has been leaked yet, a level similar to Samsung’s high-end foldables would be a major step forward for the category as a whole.
Camera system with variable aperture and zoom-macro combo
Photography is another focal area for the Mate X7. Huawei is reportedly testing two main camera options, both at 50 megapixels but with different sensor sizes—either 1/1.56 inch or a larger 1/1.3 inch. Both will likely use a physical variable aperture, a feature that enables more creative control in varied lighting. The periscope telephoto camera is also expected to offer 50 megapixels and macro capabilities, blending zoom and close-up performance in a single lens. Additional features, such as a multi-spectral sensor and an ultrawide camera, underline Huawei’s push for comprehensive imaging hardware.
Ultra-thin design continues despite hardware upgrades
Design-wise, the Mate X7 appears to stick to an ultra-thin, book-style form factor that aligns with the Mate X6. No specific measurements have surfaced yet, but Huawei seems uninterested in making compromises on thickness, even as it fits in more advanced cameras and a bigger battery.
European launch uncertain – unveiling likely in autumn
Leaks have not provided a clear timeline for the Mate X7’s launch. Judging by previous release cycles, a debut near the end of the summer or early autumn seems plausible. Although the company’s recent premium offerings have focused primarily on the Chinese market, European launch details for the Mate X7 are still unknown. Potential buyers in Germany, France, and other EU countries may need to wait for confirmation before planning an upgrade.
